What OEE actually tells you
Overall Equipment Effectiveness combines availability, performance and quality. It helps a manufacturing team understand where planned production time is being lost, but only when the underlying data and loss categories are reliable.
OEE should not be treated as a universal target copied from another factory. Product mix, process design, planned stops and measurement rules differ. The useful question is whether the data supports better decisions.
Start with consistent definitions
Availability compares running time with planned production time. Performance compares actual speed with an agreed reference cycle. Quality reflects output meeting requirements without rework or rejection. Inconsistent classification creates false precision.
Use losses to set priorities
Short stops, changeovers, reduced speed, rejects and downtime require different countermeasures. Daily management should identify the dominant loss, assign an owner and verify whether the action changed the process.
Lean can reduce waste and stabilise work. Maintenance improves reliability. Theory of Constraints prevents local OEE improvement from distracting the organisation from the constraint limiting throughput.
Connect OEE with production flow
A machine can show high OEE while the system still misses deliveries. Review OEE with schedule attainment, throughput, work in progress, lead time, quality and constraint performance.
A practical sequence
- Confirm definitions and ownership.
- Validate cycle times and loss coding.
- Identify losses that affect flow.
- Assign actions through daily management.
- Verify results before standardising.
