What predictive maintenance is
Predictive maintenance uses condition data and process knowledge to identify deterioration before functional failure. Depending on the equipment, useful signals may include vibration, temperature, pressure, current, lubricant condition, cycle counts or recurring alarm patterns.
It differs from reactive maintenance, which responds after failure, and from fixed-interval preventive maintenance. Predictive methods aim to intervene when evidence indicates that the condition is changing, while avoiding unnecessary work on healthy equipment.
Where it creates operational value
The strongest applications involve critical assets whose failure materially affects safety, quality, throughput or delivery. A predictive-maintenance programme should therefore begin with asset criticality and failure modes—not with purchasing sensors or software.

- Early detection can limit secondary damage.
- Better failure data supports root-cause analysis and equipment standards.

- Confirm data quality and collection frequency.
- Set alert rules and clear response responsibilities.
- Pilot the method on a limited group of assets.
- Review false alarms, missed events and operational impact before scaling.
Connect maintenance with production management
Condition data creates value only when someone interprets it and acts. Alerts must connect to maintenance planning, production scheduling, spare parts and escalation routines. For constraint equipment, intervention decisions should also consider throughput, buffers and available alternative capacity.
Predictive maintenance is not a universal replacement for preventive or operator-led maintenance. A balanced strategy uses the appropriate method for each failure mode and the economics of the asset.
